LOGINstall: Exception List for the User Account Control

Administrator tool distributed as careware

Munich, July 25th, 2011 – Munich based software company LOGIN releases its new tool LOGINstall, which stalls the Windows UAC by allowing unprivileged users to execute commands that were predefined by the administrator. LOGINstall avoids one of the key obstacles to use Windows 7 and is an indispensable tool for secure IT environments. Provided as careware, LOGINstall is immediately available for free download for any number of users.

These days many companies are planning or realizing the widespread use of Microsoft Windows 7. A little issue of this operating system is that "legacy" applications sometimes only can be run in the administrative context. These are primarily applications from the time before Windows 7. To run these applications, the unprivileged user must enter an administrative user name and a password via User Account Control (UAC).

LOGINstall facilitates unprivileged users to execute commands that were predefined by the domain administrator, without completely elevating the user to an administrator and without compromising Windows’ security concept. The tool provides a simple and elegant way to solve the problems of allocating rights parallel to the UAC.

Even for local administrators LOGINstall offers something special: When calling up predefined administrative commands the annoying UAC security prompt no longer appears.

Roland Loetzerich, CEO of LOGIN, says about the network admin tool: "LOGINstall is the result of a targeted redesign of our proven tool LOGIN KIS. Development objective was to make the product compatible for use with operating systems like Microsoft Windows 7, Vista and 2008, to match the demands of modern environments. On the occasion of the drought and famine in the Horn of Africa we decided to offer LOGINstall as Careware and therefore do not require any licensing fees. We rather prefer a donation to charities such as UNICEF."

Functionality

LOGINstall uses a client/server-based architecture consisting of a service that must be installed on each workstation, and a client component, called KIS ("kick into system" or "keep it simple"). A central control file acts as a positive list. It is stored on a read-only network drive and contains the administrator-defined commands which the unprivileged user can run in an administrative way. These commands can also be interactive setups or logon script launched configuration procedures. The functionality can be accessed via command line or through the graphical menu interface displaying the commands that are currently activated for the user.

Every predefined command is performed with local administrative rights. Even individual user permissions and group memberships can be considered.

Benefit to the administrator

As the administrator defines via the central control file, what software the users can run or install on their computers, there will be no uncontrolled proliferation of software on the workstations. The flexible tool eases the administrative work, and saves both time and money.

LOGINstall is careware

Because of the severe drought and famine in the Horn of Africa the manufaturer no longer requires any license costs for LOGINstall. Available as careware, the tool is intended to serve a beneficial purpose: The monetary value that companies attach to the tool, LOGIN requests to contribute as a donation to charitable organizations as UNICEF. LOGIN will neither appear as a mediator nor request a proof of donation.
