LOGIN KIS: Software Installation at Your Fingertips

Our Keypress Installation Server enables users to install pre-defined applications with a single mouse-click in standardized environments, even if the user's account lacks the required administrative privileges. The tool eases the administrator's headache, and saves both time and money as the KIS client component comfortably allows the users to install software packages on their workstations by themselves.

KIS works with admin privileges and makes it possible to install programs which require these rights, without compromising the IT's security concept.

Also KIS was developed under our slogan: Keep IT Simple!

In many companies Windows NT/2000/XP are the prevalent operating systems on the standard workstations. Although Windows NT runs much more reliably than previous versions, the installation of an OS is always error-prone if the user is keen to experiment. For this reason users have no administrative rights on their workstation in most instances. Consequently, it is not possible for them to install "approved" applications and patches.

However, it is time consuming and not feasible to let the system administrator install the applications locally. This is the time when our KIS comes into play. It enables users to install tested programmes and patches without granting them any licenses.

The concept

KIS consists of two parts: a service that is installed on each workstation and a software client which communicates with the service to start installation processes. The KIS service then browses one for the user non-writeable file which is stored in the network. For each application this file contains a section which has the path to the executable file and information about command line parameters.

From this file KISMENU creates comfortable menus which the user is free to choose.

Flexible Assignment of User Privileges

It is possible to centrally block the execution of certain installations for specific users or user groups. Windows NT allows the assignment of user privileges to files and therefore it works reliably and is easy to handle.

Installation

In an existing network KIS is easy to install. A central KIS service installs the tool on all client machines.
